Agnostic

"Agnostic" was first used by the English biologist Thomas Henry Huxley April 21, 1869. Huxley was proud to be called Darwin's Bulldog. He used "agnostic" at a meeting of the London Metaphysical Society to describe intellectuals, like himself, who were unable or unwilling to come to certain conclusions on big issues such as the existence of God. Many people wear "agnostic" proudly as a badge of superior intellect, but it occurs to me this morning that our response to God, good or bad, doesn't change him. Even if we ignore him or deny him, he is the same. He is ever the voice who invites all who labor and are heavy laden to come to him for rest; reminding us that God so loved the world that he sent his Son; that Jesus came into the world to save sinners. That he is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. Anglican's "Comfortable Words" come with the power of promise to woe us - agnostics, atheists, and Christians alike - to the loving heart of God.
